I've read in Peggy's book about the value of lubing the pump in the head, but it's not obvious to me how to do that on the WC Headmate. Do I need to pull the hoses off, remove the cover and actually get to the piston to lube it?
\
No. Lubing the PISTON (steel rod) is a waste of time and grease...'cuz only things that rub against each other require lubrication...to prevent--or at least reduce--deterioration caused by friction. The PISTON rod doesn't come in contact with anything...only the stuff ON the piston rod does--the seals, o-rings and things that rub against the inside of the pump cylinder walls. So what you you want to lubricate is the inside of the pump cylinder.
If not, how do I get the grease in there? I was thinking of using SuperLube.
Super Lube--but ONLY the thick SuperLube grease that comes in a tube--is the best choice. Remove the pump from the base...that requires removing 4 screws, but NO hoses. Lift the pump away...stick the nozzle on the tube of Superlube into the pump (at the bottom of course) and give it HEALTHY squirt. Put the pump back onto the base. Pump a few times to spread the grease all over the inside of the cylinder. You should be good to go till next spring.
These same directions also apply to lubing a Raritan PH II/PHC.
(If I ever succeed in breaking myself of the urge to lurk, I MAY someday be able to actually retire!)
