Lowering the mast?

Hi all, thanks for all the useful replies to the previous questions.

I have decided to do something about the slapping wires in the mast and was wondering if I can lower the mast in situ (ie at the marina pontoon). I seem to remember seeing some info in one of the VABG pdf docs but I cannot find it now.

I have a long stainless steel pole that came with the yacht and I have always wondered what it is for???? The mast sits on a tabernacle and looks like it can be pivoted to the rear by removing the lower bolt. The base of the mast also has a small "stub" riveted on the front which is an exact fit to the stainless steel tube.... so.... I am guessing that the long tube is slipped over the stub at the base of the mast and the long tube (which reaches about as far as the bow)is used as a pivot?
I am a bit nervous of just "having a go" so has anyone done it and can offer advice?

Thanks
John

Hi John,

Do you have some pictures, I am thinking the "long tube" is an A frame, if it is yes that is what it is for, it would help if you have a windlass on your bow to put it back up, otherwise you will need to use the boom sheet (with the pullies) to be able to put it back up.

You will need at least 2 people 3 is better, is not much strength but..................lets have a look at the pictures.

Cheers

The pole is probably a gin pole. Here's a link on how to use it:

Hi All
I have an A frame on my Vega and so am all set up for mast lowering (My mast lowers backwards and rests on a frame at the stern of the boat) for use on the Norfolk Broads. I can't comment on your set up but I would just want to go along with the idea of having enough people there. Maybe it's because I'm a new owner but even with the full set up I find the task daunting, OK - frightening! The mast seems very big when it's coming down. It does take a bit of getting up too. However, if you do have three of you I'm sure you'll manage. Do keep an eye out on all your shrouds as well. One time when I was putting my mast back up I caught a shroud over one of spreaders and broke it. Not a great idea!
