I need to repair the compression post on my '77 H30. What is the procedure for lowering the mast? How do I raise it again after having done the repair? Any suggestions and comments would be appreciated. Karl Berntson s/v CyberSail

get a crane

Karl you'll have to rent a crane and make arrangments for location to remove the mast. They charge by the hour so have everything ready before they get there. Or you can take the boat to a yard and have the work done, or if your in a slip and there is a sailboat on either side of you and they are willing to help you you can rig a anchor line thru a block on their halyard on each side of your boat. Secure the lines around your mast and let them rise to the spreaders. You'll need a lot of help doing this to raise the mast straight up. Good luck.

Need a gin pole!

I lower the mast on Wind Swept every fall and store mast down. Our club has a gin pole and myself and 2 other sailors lower the mast with no troubles each of the last 16 years. The roller furling If you have it is the most difficult part. All stays and shrouds on the mast should be taken off and the last to come loose is the headstay with roller furl. At this point the mast should be hanging from a choker that is at the spreaders. Walk the mast forward so the head stay is getting support from the mast. I stick a 2x4 in the end of mast so I can tie off the roller drum. then remove the head stay, the balance point is at the spreaders so it is quite easy to handle at the end of the gin pole cable. Good luck
