I have an 1982 Catalina 30. On the port side, forward lower shroud has pulled the deck up about 1/2-1/4 inch. Down below the shroud is connected to a L shaped bracket. It is not connected to any bulkhead, it basically just a backing plate. I an going to replace the L shaped bracket with one that will connect to the bulkhead. Any suggestions about what to do to the deck. I loosened the shroud and the deck did not lower. Before I bought the boat the deck was redone using a foam core. Any one else have this problem? any suggestions?

My Catalina has done the same on both sides.
The fiberglass has bent up because the core has softened, probily from years of water intrusion, and as been pulled up by the shroud tension. Filling the core with "crack creap" or epoxy will not work because they cannot they will not bond stiff enough to the sandwich of fiberglass. Even if they could you will need a way to push the deck back in place. Years of water have gotten to the core through the chainplates and windows and brought with it minerals and salt. That softens the core, hence loosing the stiffness.
Loosening the shroud will not affect it going down unless the deck is pushed back in place.
I don't understand how your deck could have been "redone".
My boat has been like this for several years and is sailed every other day in all types of wind.
Thought about this many times.
My solution may be rigging another shroud to the plates and attaching the other end of the shroud to a solid point on the boat and tensioning the new shroud to pull back down.

Any other ideas out there?

Good luck. See:

raised deck

My 1989 Cat 30 did the same thing when I adjusted the schrouds. All of the screws on the bulkhead are drifting up and the door knob on the head no longer aligns with the striker plate. If anyone finds a fix for this, I would like to hear about it.

Hi guys, I have some answers for you . Your deck is pulling up because the head liner was cracked most likely when the fitting was re beaded The screws where 2 tight and stressed the glass on the head liner when you add the sail pressure the head liner pulls the deck up. If you remove the u bolt and fill the holes with regular bolts you could drill a 3/16 hole between the bolts and fill with silica micro fiber epoxy mix. (use a caulk gun ). This should make the deck and head liner work together.

The screw pulling out on the bulk head is most likely a roted mast block . Drill a hole under the mast next to the wire conduit , Push a screw driver in the hole If its soft It needs to be fixed. If you need a new mast block check your keel stub its much easier to fix both at the same time. fill the hole with epoxy filler.

The problem with the ply wood core is if you get a leak the water just gets sucked in and the hole sheet of ply wood gets wet . The deck is made with 4 pieces of ply wood ( regular cheep home depot stuff) and water will soak the hole piece . My decks where wet for over 10 years and the wood was soppy but still pretty strong and glued down. The problem is with the flexing of the boat . I could not get good tension on the rig and i would have to fool with the back stay to keep the prop shaft adjusted . My boat was very nice and i sailed it for 8years. I am replacing my decks on both sides of the boat about 40 feet +- My toe rail is gone and glassed over It will be replaced with teak , the stations will be drilled thru the toe rail . I'm almost ready for primer and paint on the decks . I have to cut the traveler blocks off the roof and replace them with a new traveler and stands.

John,
Thanks for your ideas.
On my boat, the "head liner" is dry and not cracked. The mast block is solid with not rot on top or bottom.
The deck where the shrouds go through were wet and are no longer stiff so they pull up everything and lump the deck. This winter I will try my solution of fastening them down further on to solid fiberglass with either stainless plates or rods.
I'm not about to rip up the decks and redo them.

Post some pics of you deck repair.
Good luck.
