Has anyone experience of the 473's stern rub rail being under water? I have a gen set installed in the stbd aft cockpit locker and a 10'3" dinghy raised on davits. However this is no more than many other cruising boats, yet their sterns are not so low (wet!) in the water as ours. Trying to understand if this is a general problem and if there are associated dangers. I plan to add solar panels and a wind gen on the arch soon. Appreciate any input.

well know problem

This is a well known problem with the 473. I bought our 473 2 years ago and had the same concern. You'll find many comments on this design aspect of the boat. I primarily use our boat for day sailing and weekend cruising so I keep the aft water tanks empty which helps a little. I just ignore and enjoy!

tail drag

Similar issue on my 361. Stern rub rail submerges when boat speed exceeds 4 kts. Gotta believe that induces drag. Has to do with hull form. I use water from aft tank first and am adding chain to my anchor rode. Otherwise, ignore it and enjoy being out on the water.
