Hello, my name is Jared I'm new to sailboating and I recently took my 1980 oday 23 out for a sail. The deck hatch was not attached properly because I was replacing the hinges. and while under way in a strong wind my buddy as clumbsy as he is he bumped the hatch with his head while down below in the bow and off and down in the water it went never to be seen again.

My question is:

Does anyone know where I can find new/used parst for a 1980 O'day 23???

Was your's fiberglass or lexan?

I have an 80 also, and the hatch is lexan. At least I think it's lexan, but I'm pretty sure my kids will end up wrecking it. D&R Marine sells fiberglass hatches, but I would probably want to replace mine with something that we can let moonlight through.

Jared,
You need to find out the make of your hatch for the Sonic and try to get an exact replacement because another brand of hatch may not fit in that opening. If it does fit the opening, it may not be able to open in the recess of the opening because of the hinge placement.
The hatch on my O'Day 222 was made by Grey Marine which went out of business years ago, and I went through the same problem trying to get a Bomar to fit my boat with no luck. I bought a used hatch off Rudy at D & R Marine and was able to rebuild my old hatch with it. I even replaced the Lexan lens on it. You may want to check with these two places which are not too far from Bristol: http://www.marineconsignment.com/
http://www.newportnautical.com/servlet/StoreFront You may get lucky. If you have to spring for a new hatch which most are plastic, you'll need to use a caulking like Dow Corning 795 which is what they use. Polysulfide caulking can have an adverse effect on the plastic, so I'm told. The old hatch on my boat was tough to remove. I wound up using a long thin knife, plus some putty knives to separate the hatch from the old caulking. I heated the knives with my blow torch and inserted them under the hatch flange to get it to loosen up. It takes a while to do it, but it worked for me. When I removed the hatch, I layed a piece of plywood over the hatch opening and also covered it with a small Polytarp and brought the hatch with me to Newport Nautical Supply. I didn't have much luck there, but maybe you will. Good luck with that.
Joe
