Lost My D Shackle for the Jib

OK. I knew better. Had some rough weather and while taking down the jib the D shackle went right out of my hand and into the water. Naturally. Obviously it will now be a captive pin and not loose. ANYONE know what size it is supposed to be for a 235 Hunter? Any suggestions on what has worked best for them? Call me a klutz. Go ahead.

Of anything you have in your hand on a sailboat, in my experience, if it's stainless steel, it has at least a 4X chance of being lost overboard.

It happens to everyone. We don't seem to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. If you have a splice at the end of your halyard "Ronstan" makes a locking shackle which can be positioned on the splice and then held securely with a clevis pin. Depending on the size theys sell from $15 to $25. If you are willing to splice the halyard you may also go with a snap shackle. I would avoid the use of plain D shackles unless you are willing to carry a few spares.

If you use a long eye splice on all your halyards you can install and remove a shackle whenever you want without loosing it or cutting the line. I like the captive headboard shackle pictured because it's on or off with just a half twist.

If I didn't know any better I would say Davy Jones was a hoarder. I have even dumped a sheriff's portable radio in the lake when I was the jetski cop. Yeah, definitely did not go over to well with the dept. Feel better now?

A good alternative is to leave the shackle on the bow and add a pelican hook to the tack of your head sails.

There are two kinds of pelican hooks. Get the kind that can be closed without pulling the pin out. It only takes one hand to close.

Yeah, I feel better. My husband's an assistant fire chief and at least THAT hasn't happened to us yet.

I thought about a pelican hook. I really didn't like the idea of a D shackle again. I hate fiddling with it especially in rough weather. A friend of ours had a 23ft Oday and I think HE had a pelican hook on the jib. I want something quick, sturdy, and either floats or stays on the jib.

He's definitely a hoarder. He doesn't need so many of my fishing poles, sunglasses and a cell phone. Who's he going to call anyway? It doesn't work under water! Sheesh.
