I have a continuous problem with losing sail battens. Lost battens mean ordering on the phone or web, paying s&h charges and the adverse effects of sailing without all the battens. Is there any reason for not using spare battens from made wood such as white oak and finished with a good spar varish? Can I harm the sail? There's losts of useful wood scraps to be found in my workshop.

Just made mine today
Made them out of composite stock from H.D. Ripped the stock on the table saw, cut to lenght, and sanded off the edges. total invested 6.00. Slipped them in and sailed them tonight. Little heavier than batten stock, but fine. Pray for Wind, Lugeman

Sew In
Make sure they are the accurate length od the batten pockets and sew the end shut with a couple stithes. Also avoid flogging the mainbyhoisting it and bearing off soon; likewise come head to wind and drop it quickly.
