Hi, I was cruising my boat in Puget Sound this past weekend when I experienced a lose of power after being hit broadside by a large wake. The engined died immediately after a couple big rolls. The engine restarted and ran fine. I noticed after encountering smaller (but still decent size) wakes that the engines RPMs waned during the wakes but would catch back up after we passed thru them. Just replaced the fuel filter 3-4 hours before and ran fine but we did not encounter much wave/wake during that time. Had the tank cleaned last season and it was 2/3 full. Anybody have any ideas? Boat is a 1984 Hunter 27´ w/ an original Westerbeke 2 cyl, 10HP.

Sounds like fuel starvation related to fuel slopping around the tank. Try it again with a full tank of fuel. Also many people remove the small internal filter which you may have at the foot of the fuel pickup tube that sticks into the fuel tank. They want their fuel blockage to appear in a more accessible location!

Loss of power when boat rocks and rolls.

It happens on mine too. I suspect that the back pressure on the exhaust is overwhelming the motor when the water level rises up the motor shaft.

So you think it would be a dirt issue?
Well I doubt that it is air in the fuel line because the engine would not readily start again when the rocking stopped. That leaves dirt or water in the fuel. I suspect that its not water because of the easy restart that you quoted. My money would be on dirt.

I would be totally stunned if the cause was water back pressure on the exhaust system.
