I have an old LORAN unit on my boat. Have never used it. I am considering removing it. I mainly use a GPS unit when necessary. Any opinions or recommendations appreciated. Thanks everyone!
...last Fall to a 'Want Ad' in the Boat US magazine that's still running. There's a Captain Tom (or is it Dave? Dunno...) in the Keys that appears to be stockpiling LORAN, for some unknown reason. I figure it was a fair swap: I found a home for something I never used and acquired 2 snap shackles that I do use. Plus, I freed up a switch on the breaker box. Win/win is a good thing.
For many reasons including, because it is cheap; it is effective, we dropped bombs on targets in Viet-Nam using it nearly forty years ago; fisherman love it, as it will bring you back to the same location more effectively than will GPS. It also may be easier to protect the towers on our own soil than satellites. All of that said sell it and buy an additional GPS unit.
Still works great. About the only thing I use it for is the anchor alarm. Our Loran is at the navigation station, which is close enough for the alarm to wake me if the boat shifts outside the parameters that I have set. Otherwise, it has lots of nice features that do not get used. I prefer our Garmin 178C for navigation.Terry
