Surprise! I thought it was not only going to be continued, but improved. In fact, I was thinking about picking up an old unit. I just saw a dual GPS-Loran C unit advertised in a high end power boat mag not long ago. Maybe I'll dust off my Navy sextant instead.

MAN.. I have a RAYTHEON unit.. from before they were RayMarine..Still works fine but won't soon apparently.. I had read that they were going to continue and improve as well.. as a back up for when the military has to kill the accuracy of the GPS.. I guess I'll have a space for some other toy now above the nav station..

In ten years they will turn loran back on and kill the gps and that will boost the economy cause every one will have to buy a new loran or a loran/gps so you can cover your a..s for the next change :D

Nothing like our government!

“During the past 10 years, approximately $160 million in taxpayer funds have been invested toward modernizing the LORAN-C network, equipment, and infrastructure. This investment of taxpayer money represents progress toward the full deployment of Enhanced LORAN, also known as eLORAN, designed from the beginning to be a backup to GPS."

Take a look at this article:

Hand raised

Raise your hand if you still have Loran on you boat and use it regularly.
We do.

It's a Micrologic, came with the boat, in 1986, we bought her in 1998. Still loaded and usable.

it is the timing that will kill us

Well we are in it now. Loran was our only back up for timing signals. If something goes wrong with GPS you loose
your cell phone (already happened in LA last year)
you computer internet connection
you land line phone (which now use trunking over the internet BTW)
your cable TV
and then a few hours later
your electrical power (this could be prevented if the power guys can communicate between stations oh wait their land and cell phones don't work, we are toast folks)

Sat TV should be ok so you can meet at my house and we can sit around and watch all the blackberry users try and figure out what to do now.

Does that mean they will be taking all of those lines off of our charts? I hope.

I still have and still use a hand held loran, I keep it clipped to a bracket at the stern rail . I think it was the original hand held Loran, I don't recall ever seeing a competing model as GPS came out soon after. It take a looooong time to pick up the signal and analyze it until it settles down for use, after that it works good. I'm not kidding in saying it takes up to 15 minutes before it is working, probably only has 8k of memory. I always liked the unit it would give you distance to waypoints, ETA, etc. but no graphics, just text and lat lon for outputs, I always found it very accurate.

Latest Update As Of 26july

As of August 3rd, last of the east coast loran stations go offline (this includes US participation in the Canadian chain.)

*** Special Notice Regarding LORAN Closure: ***</SPAN> In accordance with the 2010 DHS Appropriations Act, the U.S. Coast Guard terminated the transmission of all U.S. LORAN-C signals on 08 Feb 2010. This termination does not affect U.S. participation in the Russian American or Canadian LORAN-C chains. U.S. participation in these chains will continue temporarily in accordance with international agreements. You may read more and download pertinent documents using the links below.

LORAN-C was originally developed to provide radionavigation service for U.S. coastal waters & was later expanded to include complete coverage of the continental U.S. as well as most of Alaska. Twenty-four U.S. LORAN-C stations work in partnership with Canadian and Russian stations to provide coverage in Canadian waters and in the Bering Sea. They system provides better than 0.25 nautical mile absolute accuracy for suitably equipped users within the published areas. and provides navigation, location, and timing services for both civil and military air, land and marine users. It is approved as an en route supplemental air navigation system for both Instrument Flight Rule (IFR) and Visual Flight Rule (VFR) operations. The LORAN-C system serves the 48 continental states, their coastal areas, and parts of Alaska. Dedicated Coast Guard men and women have done an excellent job running and maintaining the LORAN-C signal for 52 years. It is a service and mission of which the entire Coast Guard can be proud. LORAN-C Termination Information

The Coast Guard published a Federal Register notice on Jan. 7, 2010, regarding its intention to terminate transmission of the LORAN-C signal Feb. 8, 2010. A LORAN Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement Record of Decision stating that the environmentally preferred alternative is to decommission the LORAN-C Program and terminate the North American LORAN-C signal was published in the Federal Register on Jan. 7, 2010.

The entire Specification may be downloaded also.
The Coast Guard strongly urges mariners currently using LORAN-C for navigation to shift to a GPS navigation system and become familiar with its operation as soon as possible. Mariners will not be able to rely upon LORAN-C for navigation as of Feb. 8, 2010.
LORAN-C has, as a result of technological advancements in the last 20 years, became an antiquated system no longer required by the armed forces, the transportation sector or the nation’s security interests and is used only by a small percentage of the population. The Coast Guard understands that LORAN-C is still used by a small segment of the public and that those users will have to shift to GPS or other systems; however, continued use of limited resources to operate LORAN-C is no longer prudent use of taxpayer funds and is not allowed under the 2010 DHS Appropriation Act.
The Coast Guard has enjoyed a long and close relationship with the many communities located near LORAN-C facilities and we value those relationships. The Coast Guard will continue to honor those relationships by working to minimize any adverse impacts to communities caused by site closures.
The decision to cease transmission of the LORAN-C signal reflects the president’s pledge to eliminate unnecessary federal programs.
