I have a Raytheon loran that does not work. The unit signs on but does not seem to be recieving. I replaced the fiberglass whip antenna, but it didn't help. I wanted to replace the electronic part of the antenna, but can't seem to be able to find one. Before I continue on this process of elimination, can anyone give me any suggestions on where to start my trouble shooting? Thanks, Bob

circuit corrosion

a friend purchased a boat that the loran did not work kept saying it was searching . the fibreglas antenna looked like it needed replacing. before doing that he had a technician check it out after checking everything he gave the case a whack and said what happens is contacts oxidize and a whack jars them enough to make contact. it now works

Corrosion

Feb.16, 2001 Dear Bob, Our Northstar 800 had corrosion at the push buttons wiring point - a careful clean up and resoldering fixed it. On our Furuno radar the same thing happened at the wiring on the pots and we solved it by taking the old pot controls out and wiring in new ones from a scrapped radar that had less wear then ours. Our Heart 2000 invertor stopped working and we had the control switches cleaned up on it . All three worked afterwards. Corrosion is a likely cuilprit in our opinion. bypass

Use a wire to bypass the mount and go right from the cable center to the antenna base. wait 5-10 minutes and see if your loran picks up coordinates. If it does you need a new base or you can permanently run the wire to the antenna base, strip lots of the wire end, and thread it into the base with the antenna. (I did this with mine, works well)
