I have removed the panels in the quarter berth and these do not give access to the steering cables. There is a type of pan under the pedestal and quadrant that seem to be sealed from access below. I guess I need to hear from someone with an 88 year model? Is it possible maybe to tighten the cables from the top of the pedestal? Good sailing Ron B

If the '88 is similar to the '85 (and it probably

is :) )the fiberglass pan that is attached to the underside of the cockpit floor (or the ceiling of the q'berth) is removeable. It should be held in place by about 8 screws. When you take that off, you have access to the whole steering quadrant. Just wear seom kind of eye protection since you're working flat on your back.

Access panel

Our 84 Catalina has an access panel in the bottom of the lazarette held with 6 screws. It is directly over the quadrant and the ends of the cables and their connection to the quadrant.

I checked in the quarter berth up under the steering pedestal, and there is a opan there, but it does not come down, and is one part with the floor. The four bolts holding the steering pedestal come through it. So, I musthave a different model? The only way to get at the cables must be to take up the section of the floor right behind the pedestal? Ron B

Steering gear access on an '88 model

We have a 1988 Catalina 30. Access to the steering is via the panel that's just aft of the base of the steering pedestal. You get to it from the cockpit, not from the quarter berth. Ours was held in w/ four screws. Once that panel is removed, you'll have access to the sheeves, much of the cable, and the radial (like a quadrant). Adjusting the cable tension is pretty straightforward. Best of luck. Gary Kunkel
