Loose stantions

We use the port side gate to gain access to our boat 95% of the time. Both stantions became loose. I removed the access plate inside the boat and discovered that the bolts go all the way through all right, but there were NO washers and NO nuts on the inside. They were being held there with caulk only. I will have to remove all the inspection plates and check each of the stantions.

Ah, Mark, Before You Do That....

...check to see that the stantions aren't bolted into an aluminum pad in the deck moulding. Way back, I seem to remember a discussion that the standard deck hardware was attached via machine screws into tapped aluminum pads. So, it may be that this is how it was intended. Having aid that, a locking nut would certainly provide for a way to keep any continuous working of the stantion from losening. Good Luck, Rick D.

Nut to worry

When I got my Hunter, I saw all these bolts with no nuts underneath, and figured the same as you that someone (sorry but I can't help myself here) screwed up. The reality id that Hunter does something very clever, by embedding metal plates in the glass, and tapping them. This saves labour, as you don't need two people to fasten, and it spreads out the load.

samo-samo on more expensive boats.

Mark: Hark. When I returned from Hawaii this summer on a Santa Cruz 52, I ask how the stanchions were mounted. Well to my suprise they were in pockets and bedded with 5200. They did not even have a screw or a bolt thru the stanchion either. Now this sounded dumb to me. This was really strange being that they had to replace 2 of them that were bent during the Pacific Cup race.
