We got wet last week, and while on the boat this weekend, I noticed that one of the stanchions was loose. I tried to retighten them, but apparently whatever is used as a backing plate/nut is stripped and the screws (1/4 20 SS) won't tighten. Any ideas out there on how to fix this? Thanks Bryce S/V Spellbinder H410

Rebed it

Remove the stanchion & rebed it. If you need instruction on how to do that, search either HOW or Catalina archives as it's been pretty thoroughly discussed fairly recently. Alternatively, you could buy or check out "Good Old Boat" or some other boat maintenance book. Don't ignore it as water will quickly get into the cabin, not to mention the coring. LaDonna

Happened to me too..

Here's the problem...the bolts were tapped into 1/4 aluminum plate encapsulated into the fiberglass. They are now stripped...here's what you have to do...remove the bolts and buy some washers and nylon lock nuts for each bolt. recalk the stantion and bolt holes. Reinstall the bolts and tighten all the way down. Remove the inspection plates beneath each stantion and add the washer and lock nut to each bolt. Tighten them down and you are back in business. Had to do this with my 460 last summer.
