When we sail our 84 H31 upwind the leeward shrouds become pretty loose. Is this normal or do I need to do some rig tunning ? PS: We have the B&R rig with backstays. Thanks, Bob S/V Lady Di II

Leeward Shrouds

Bob: All the experts say that there should be no looseness in the leeward shrouds when sailing upwind. Leeward shrouds should be reasonably taut. There have been many posts on this topic over the past couple of years. There is a good set of instructions on how to tune the B & R rig posted somewhere in the archives. Jim Bohart (formerly of Hunter Marine) wrote several posts on tuning the B & R rig. Hope this helps. Dave McIlveen 28.5 Osprey

From the Loo's book....

B&R rig: all measures given in % of breaking strength of stay/shroud. Fore stay 10% lower shroud 10% upper shroud 20% Back stay just tight. Leeward shrouds should remain tight up to about 18Kt winds. Cranking on the backstay adjuster will cause shrouds to losen earler.
