The 2 large philips head screws on my 1994 h26 which hold the stanchions near the anchor locker are loose and will not tighten. They act as if there are nuts on the back side which have loosened. There seems to be no access from the inside of the boat. How do it tighten these screws? For clarification, I am refering to the ones that are at the front of the locker just beneath. the saddle where the mast rides

Srewing the ?

Doug; Just a litttle humor with the title response. There is a large aluminum plate underneath or inlaid in the fiberglass. This was drilled and tapped to accept 1/4 X 20 bolts. Obviously over time and what would tend to make me think that much jerking on the bow pulpit has occoured causing the bolts to loosen. If you cannot tighten, then the threads are stripped. To remedy this situation, unscrew the bolts, remove all caulking, re-tap for use of the next size larger bolt and this will solve your problem. In general, if you cannot find access to nuts then you can figure inlaid aluminum. Go fix it and happy sailing. The only loose nuts this morning is of course in my head. kCrazy Dave

Heli-Coil

I would recomend that you go to an auto supply store and get a Heli-Coil kit for the 1/4" bolt. You then re-tap the hole for the Heli-Coil and install the Coil, then use the same, or same size bolt. This will be stronger than the origional bolt into aluminum. Be sure to pot all of the fixtrures to keep out water.

heli-coil

Doug, With regards to the heli-coils. They are one of the best methods used in the manufacturing industry. I work with them all the time as an engineer. If you go to an auto store be sure to get the coated type for aluminum. The auto store may not have the "better" grade you seek. If you have a tool and die shop or a machine shop nearby, ask them who they buy their coils from. There are a couple of places that sell machinist tools out of Chicago that would have what you need. I also haven't had experience with them exposed to salt water. This may not be a problem for you but, something to keep in mind.
