Loose lower rudder bracket

I have an O'Day 22, and just noticed the lower rudder bracket is loose. The two bolts on the right don't tighten up at all, and can be pulled right out, and the two on the left can't be tightened either, but can't be turned or pulled out. I can cut off the two bolts that won't come out and push the bolts through, but then what? Can access somehow be gained to the lower inside of the stern to allow the installation of backing plates and nuts? Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Gudgeon Problems

Frank....I assume you're speaking of the lower gudgeon on your 22. Yes, the area is accessable; I replaced the backing plate and re-beded mine 3 or 4 years ago. You do have to be something of a contortionist to reach the area and it's not much fun in hot weather. It's obviously also a two-man job...one inside with a wrench and one outside with a screwdriver. Good luck.

loose lower gudgeon

Rick/Apollo Beach, FL.-Thanks for the response. How did you access the lower gudgeon? Through the starboard storage area or up through the inside of the hull? Frank in Geneva

Double-Jointed Approac h

Frank....As I recall, I crawled back on the port-side settee, and from there you can get one of your arms (don't remember right/left; belly/back)down to the gudgeon bolts. It helps if you're double jointed. Rick/'Solace';Apollo Beach, FL
