Loose Leech Line on Jib Cause Halyard Wrap?

Hello. I have an 84 Newport 28. I have had it for almost 4 years and have never been able to use the jib furler. It always gets stuck due to halyard wrap. When I first took over the boat the sail was wrapped perfectly, since opening up the head sail to inspect it I have never been able to get it to roll back in without the aforementioned wrap.

I have tried several strategies but to no avail. I noticed for the first time that the jib has what appears to be a leech line. Can this be the source of the problem? Thank you very much for any advice!

leech line no, luff tension (halyard) can improve furling, along with a slow furl. MikeHoncho is correct, best method is halyard restrainer.

If it's worked before try dropping the sail and cleaning the upper swivel. Most don't need lube so just flush it with a lot of water and make sure it turns smoothly under tension. You can check this by running a short line from the head attachment to the drum and putting tension on the halyard. Then turn with your hand. I got tired of cleaning mine every month so installed a halyard retainer like the one in the article provided by @MikeHoncho . As @Apex said, adjusting halyard tension + or- can work.

Thanks for the replies! I used a sort of wheel spacer that was supposed to help create a bit more angle but it didn't help. I have seen the restrainers you guys mentioned as well. I will give it another look and try your suggestions. Cheers!

If there is room above the head of the jib, raise the jib as much as possible by placing a loop at the tack of the jib made out of 1/4" line.

Restrainer. Anything else is a patch job. Easy to add, just climb up and rivet it on. Or lower the mast, if that is easier for you.

I have had restrainers on several boats.
