Dear 322 Owners, I am in the process of buying a used 1988 O'day 322. I just got the survey and it was discovered that the wing keel is slightly loose, having a play of about a 1/4 inch. No water was discovered in the bilge. My agent advises that touquing the bolts should be sufficient but the surveyor says drop the keel and re-seat. Has anyone had any experience with loose keels on 322's and if so, do you have any thoughts, advice or experiences? Your help would be greatly appreciated ASAP because I will have to make a decision by 11/15/2000 Thanks, Larry B. Maier

Larry, drop the keel and reseat.

I had a "grounding experience" last summer and, as a result, had the boat hauled and surveyed. We were anchored out one afternoon in late July when a thunderstorm hit and my lunch hook broke loose. (That's another story!) After BoatUS got us up and away, we noticed an unusual amount of water in the bilge and the pump was working hard to keep the bilge dry. We wound up staying overnight at a marina and I had to manually operate the bilge all night long. The Rule automatic switch had failed. The next day when the boat was hauled, we could see that the caulk joint had failed. In one place I could peel the caulk away. Believe it or not, it was suggested by one surveyor that the keel bolts be drawn up and the boat refloated. Fortunately the other surveyor, the boatyard manager and I agreed that it should be dropped, recaulked and resealed. The result: a bilge that is dryer than it was before the grounding. My recommendation is to drop the keel, recaulk, and retighten the keel bolts. That is the absolutely best choice to make under the circumstances. My boat is an '86 272, yours an'88 322. For your peace of mind, replace that 12 year old caulk while the boat is hauled. Tom

Reseat it

Larry, Reseating it is really the better idea, as Tom says. Even if torquing would solve the problem, it wouldn't let you see if what's in there is currently sound. If its been admitting water, the wood in the keelson could be in tough shape. It also could be fine. I'd rather know. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
