Has anyone ever cut an access panel under the aft head in a H40 to gain access to anchor down a different head? And if so, any luck? Thanks

You shouldn't need to do that...

The head should have lag bolts long enough to secure it without having to get the underside of the sole. Otherwise, NObody would would ever be able to replace a toilet without having to take a chain saw to their boat.

Soft wood

Peggy, we know about the lag bolts, but someone before us has changed heads and the holes when drilled are bringing up soft wood. OOOPS! Are we dealing with taking that chainsaw and removing the suface til we find good wood or place another sheet on top? And by the way, we have an odor in the aft head, even when using the LectraSan.Is this REALLY the harbor water? Please send help. Sandy

Softwood

If your 40 is put together like my 33 you have a piece of 1/2" plywood as backer to the hull floor liner. Water has gotten to it over the years via the old holes or down the new bolts. On my 33 I attacked it by installing threaded aluminum plates below the floor with pieces of threaded rod as studs instead of lag screws. To do that I had to cut a 6" hole to get my hand into. In my case I used a 1 1/2" thick piece of plastic to raise the new toilet and it covered the the access hole as well. I think in your case you might be able to ise a thin piece of plastic siliconed in place to cover the hole. if you can work out the placement. The trick in the future is to keep the water away from the plywood, or in this case what's left of it.
