Peggy,

Last year I followed your advice and (any your book) and removed and replaced the old head in my 1983 H-30. The H-30 has a molded in fiberglass tank under the V berth. Other than the stench the head and hoses came out pretty easily. I then cleaned out the tank molded tank.

I purchased the quality replacement hoses you suggested. I haven't used the head yet but did put some test water in the clean tank with some colored tank deodorizer in it. When I installed the new hoses I noted that the new hoses weren't real snug on the molded in fitting on the tank. A little dish soap was all it took. 2 good quality hose clamps haven't sealed it. (Not that I thought they would....hence only test fluid so far). A gallon of test fluid went to the bilge over a week or so leaking form the take drain hose that goes up to the deck pump out. Good thing it wasn't the real deal.

I seem to remember that the old hoses came out pretty easily when I removed them but to tell you the truth I was gagging pretty bad back then.

Is there kind of fitting that can be used on the end of the hose to make a tighter fitting or a special technique I missed? Is there a teflon wrap or something or pipe dope that could be used on the smooth molded in nipple that comes out from the bottom of the tank to build out the fitting just a little?

Your advice would be most appreciated....

A question...

How do your tank fittings connect to your FG tank...are they (hopefully!) threaded? Or integral FG nipples? If they're threaded, try buying new 1.5" thread-barb fittings...but NOT gray PVC!

If they're integral nipples, you'll need to find some way to increase the ODs to get a tighter fit. Without seeing what you're dealing with, I don't know what to recommend....wrap 'em in duct tape?

Nelson: If you have molded nipples you can consider using some Atomic Tape or one of the other silicone tapes. I had to do this on my sink drain to connect it to the discharge hose.

The tape sticks to its self. It is worth a try.

Peggy,

Thanks for the quick reply. The nipples on my tank are integral (molded into) the tank. They are smooth with no ridges.......So I guess I"ll try "atomic" tape that was suggested by Steve Dion. Any idea where you can find atomic tape. I've never heard of it before.
