Loos gauge.

OK so I now have the loos gauge. Without having to go through the archives can I please have just the tension for all the rigging and how it relates to the figure on the gauge? D1, V1, RD1. Might be interesting to know the tension on the forestay once it is all done?? Thanks a MILLION. I'm looking forward to getting it just right.

you a copy of the procedure I used on my 95 H26 which is virtually the same as your boat. The exception is the 260 having slightly smaller rigging size wire than the 26. If you simply want the shroud tension value then I used 20% of the wire breaking strength as suggested by Hunter Marine. As far as the forestay tension, well, it is controlled by the mast rake value, the mast bend installed and the tension you installed on the shrouds. Then there is the factor of forestay or roller reefing sag. If you have added a backstay then you have a whole new horse to ride. The Loos gauge should have the wire size breaking strength printed on the face of the gauge. That is where you start from. I was never smart enough to figure out what the hell d1, v1 or rd1 stood for, so I started out in the sandbox under the boat and then climbed aboard. Ray S/V Speedy PS. The procedure has been posted in the smaller boat forum archives within the past 3 months so it should be very easy to find. I will be in and out the next week so that might be the fastest answer.

Yes I guess thats all I will need. If 20% of breaking stain is enough to get it right then thats the procedure I will use. Setting the mast up, rake and centered is pretty straight forward. As a matter of interest over the weekend I placed the spirit level on the yacht whilst it was in the water. I marked the glass exactly where the bubble was so will use that to get her level when I set the rake on terra firma. Regards Mark

Rig tension

In my experience, the recommended rig tensions will get you into the ballpark, but you will probably need to tweak the rig a little more afterwards to get it properly tuned for your boat. Other factors such as backstay tension (mast bend) and condition of the mainsail do make a difference. Happy sailing. Peter H23 "Raven"

I need more help

Went out yesterday after tuning the rig using a Loos gage and following the tips from this forum. Winds 10 - 15, gusty and when close hauled the uppper mast was being pulled over to the leeward by the force on the jib. Added to all this was a huge weather helm at every wind gust. With no back stay I can't figure out what to do. Mast rake was modest; keel test- lowered to various positions and still the weather helm. OK Ray, what am I doing wrong?
