Ericson 31 Independence Lake Lanier
I have an Ericson 31 Independence. Moving it from Virginia to an inland lake in GA I was required by law to remove and cap the discharge to the thru hull. The man I had make the changes left a high loop in the line from the toilet to the holding tank, not a vented loop just a loop.

I am changing my holding tank this weekend and am wondering if this is the correct way to do this? When going directly from toilet to holding tank is a loop required? vented? or just the most direct and shortest route?

Thanks

Pat

I'd leave it there...

If the toilet only goes to the tank, no y-valve or connection to a below waterline thru-hull, a VENTED loop in the head discharge line isn't necessary, but a LOOP can keep tank contents that spill into that line when the boat is heeled from getting back to the toilet. However, it's best to put it immediately after the toilet, especially if it would be an uphill run to the tank without it...'cuz you only have to pump long enough to move the bowl contents over the top of the loop, then gravity does the rest.

So you have TWO reasons to keep the loop.

But a VENTED loop can actually create more problems than it solves unless the air valve is keep clean and replaced as needed.

Which lake in GA? I was on Lanier for more than 20 years.

Peggie,

No kidding! We are on Lake Lanier, Sunrise Cove Marina. Where did you keep your boat?

Thanks for the advice on the reason to keep the non-vented loop.
