We have located a 1991 M26s in Augusta, going down to look at it first weekend in August. The price is in my budget and he says there are a lot of "stuff" that goes with it. Wish me luck.

Good luck. You'll love it.

After an extended search, we recently purchased an '88 26D that fit within our meager boating budget and we're having a blast.

Having it sit on the trailer in our driveway and not having to pay slip fees frees up a nice bit of budget to work through the little things on the boat. It's also very nice to be able to sail out of a variety of marinas.

Enjoy...

We are goind down to Augusta saturday to look at the boat. I have a 2005 Ranger pickup with a 4 lt. V6 and towing package with 4 wheel drive. I hope I will be able to tow it ok. Im a little nervous about that. But if the boat looks as good as the picture, Im sure we will be bringing her home with us.

You should have no problem towing your 26.
I tow my Mac 25 with a '95 Ranger with a 3.0, and it handles it ok. I believe the 26 is lighter than the 25, IIRC.

I towed my 26S for 4 years with a 3-liter Ranger. Pulled it okay. Stopping was a concern- just keep extra stopping room between you and the vehicle in front of you. I just bought a Ford F-150 crewcabto make towing a little easier and be able to carry more people. -Paul

I agree with what has been said so far. Only to add in . Be very very attentive when towing on the highway.
After I towed mine 6 or 8 times I got comfortable and started to relax. Bad for me.
One split second I looked at something off the side of the road, the next split second I had a line of slowing cars in front of me and I needed the shoulder to keep from hitting the one directly in front of me. On the shoulder was a police officer reforming a traffic stop. I stopped with a couple car lengths to spare but I was all puckered up!
You don't need to be all white knuckled about it but always keep in mind that you can't stop anywhere near as quick as you normally can. Let the passengers do all the rubbernecking!

I'm another one that initially at least, pulled my 26S with a 99' Ranger 3L V6 2WD. You should be in good shape with a 4L 4WD w/tow package. My only suggestion would be to add trailer brakes if it doesn't already have them.

watch the tongue weight!
if the engine is hanging off the back, try to move into the front of the cabin. (below decks)

a lot of stock trailers axles are moved back 12"...

check the tires, grease bearing (buddy types), and take it slow. if you stay under 65mph, you should be OK.

over 65mph, you generate a lot more heat in the tires, and they might just go... plus chances of jackknifing go way up at speed.

good luck!

We now have brakes on the trailer and we can stop way better, but I still try and leave a lot of room ahead even if cars take advantage of it and keep filling it. I'd suggest to anyone towing to do a couple panic stops in a controlled safe area a couple times to see how bad it can get. With no brakes you can increase distance in front of you, but still can't control someone pulling in from a side road or someone else entering your lane carelessly.

If you tow very far invest in brakes. Probably the law in your state anyway as most states do require brakes if the trailer is over 2000 lb.. Not sure how MacGregor got around that when they build the older trailers. I think that now all factory trailers do come with brakes.

Good luck with the new boat,

Sum
