The Yanmar YSM12 in my 1979 H30 just doesn't seem to be enough anymore. I love my boat but think she's a bit under-powered. Does anyone have any ideas about which engine might be a good replacement? Thanks in advance.

What are your requirements?

What do you expect a new engine to do for you. Will you install it yourself? How much do you want to spend. What dealers are close enough to you to be of help?

New or used!

Herb: You have options of new or used engines. If you look around you may find a good used 2GM20F at a good price. If you are looking for new then you may consider the Bukh diesel. Nice little engine and somewhat quiter than the Yanmar. This is not a cheap proposition regardless of what you do. You are looking at probably $3000-6000. (Engine, Trans, Control Panel, Shaft, Prop, Mounts etc.)

engine replacement

I have same boat same engine. Last year I replaced with a nammi diesel 3 cylinder 21 hp. it required some work and changing but I got it done. Also replaced hot water tank and fuel tank same time. Engine must be out to replace hot water tank. Also old tank was eletric only. Now I can have hot water when I'm anchored out. It was a lot of work. Nothing matched. Also had to replace cables. I had to have the engine lined up, because I couldn't get it right. I could have replaced with yanmar but it would have been a 2 cylinder 18 hp. for more money. Nammi diesel is a kobuto engine. Check it out jerry

Thanks for Your Thoughts

Thanks for your comments regarding my plan to re-power. Sam: I'm counting on the new engine to help me get out at the Barnegat Inlet or go through the Pt. Pleasant canal. As you know, that can be exciting at times - especially with a 10-horse, one cylinder engine. Naturally, I want to spend as little as necessary but I don't plan to try to install it myself. I'm at Riverbank marina in Bayville and Fuller Marine does a lot of the work here. I'll call him first. Since you're close by - do you have any recommendations? I'll welcome any suggestion - Thanks. Steve: I'll take a look at the Bukh (they must have a website somewhere). The price range is about what I expected, so it may be a possibility. Thanks. Jerry: I'll check out the Nammi. I know what you mean about the waterheater. I took mine out a couple of years ago and had to take it out in pieces. Thanks for the suggestion.

Barnagat inlet? What's your draft

I was under the impression that the channel leading to the inlet was shallow and thus I never tried it for fear of getting stuck. I have a 4ft draft. I would agree that 10hp 1cyl motor is not enough to push a 30ft boat through that inlet safely when it's in it's glory. On my 28.5 I have a 2gm20f 2 cyl. 18 hp. I wonder why Hunter put such a small engine in a big boat like your 30???

4 ft draft

Hi Mike: My boat draws 4 feet. The channel leading to the inlet is hairy in spots but you can get through. I've done it on boats that draw 4'6" and came through just fine. You really have to be careful though. I agree about the size of the engine Hunter put in its 30 ft boats. 10hp just isn't enough.

If you're talking Fuller marine machine of Bayville, the Mercury guy, he's superb with Mercury outboards and a nice guy to do business with, but to my knownedge does not work with small diesels. However, there is Dillons Creek Marina in Island Heights. Brian Hall, who lists himself on his card as General Manager, is knowledgable about Yanmars on a par with Larry Berlin of Mack Boring/Engine City Tech. I stood to the side at the Atlantic city show two years running and listened to him talk to numerous different people about any subject at all concerning Yanmars. Always on the lookout for B-S I heard NONE, and I'm an expert. Everything he told the folks he talked to was straight up stuff. The ultimate compliment I can give him is that if there were something on my boat or engine I simply could not do, he is the guy I'd take it to. (Although it hasn't happened yet, and I've done EVERYTHING on my 33 from the bottom of the keel to the top of the masthead truck, stem to rudder tube nut.) Another thought; You might want to check out the range of engines Vetus is selling based on Mitsubishi small diesels. It ranges from a 10 HP or so single cylender to around 50 HP 4 Cyl, if I recall. Pricing on the engines looked good as compared to the others we see. I would check out the availability of a dealer network though. Doesn't do much good if you can't keep it running. That of course is the advantage to Yanmar, aside from the known reliability, there's at least three dealers in even the smallest of ports. I can rattle off four on the Forked River alone. Let me know if you need help.

Couple of websites.

I have also been considering repowering. My 2QM20 is a little light for the H37C. Some sites I have looked at: Bukh: http://www.lsm-diesel.dk/engelsk/index.htm Vetus: http://www.vetus.com/products/engine/engines_houston.htm Beta: http://www.betamarinenc.com/small_diesel_engines.htm (Related Link) Let us know the result!
