Hi folks,

I'm looking to purchase a Hunter 340 preferably with SS arch and roller main (I think 2000 or 2001). Any leads out there?
Lake Ontario region.
Much appreciated!

Greg,

Thank you, yes I've looked there and haven't found exactly what we're looking for. Maybe one will pop up but wanted to see if anyone on these forums was close to selling or knew someone that was.

BTW - our second boat was a 322...we loved it!!

thanks for the reply!

You can't have mine I like it too much :) But seriously you might consider a 380 of the same years. Very similar to the 340 with a bit more room. Not sure if there are any out there but for what it is worth if I wanted to move up that would be high on my list.

Take care,

=Levin,

Thank you for the input! I think the 380 would be a bit more boat than we want. If I were to move up it would be to the 356 but no bigger. Our desired size, vintage and budget seem to line up well with the 340.

Does your 340 have the fiberglass arch or SS? Roller main? Any insights as to these options?

thanks!

My boat has the stainless steel arch but not the in-mast furling. I like the former and would advise you to avoid the latter. No experience with in-mast furling on this boat obviously but that was pretty early in the years where that feature was offered. My understanding is that the one that came with the 340 wasn't the best and could lead to a lot of problems. However perhaps an owner who has one might chime in and correct me. Like I said, never worked with one on this boat but that is what I've heard.

Take care,
-Levin

Seems like there is a lot of literature on in mast furling and tired sails issues. Might be worth looking into.

I've had a 2000 340 for about 10 years. I prefer the stainles arch. I think it looks better, but our 336/340 Facebook group has several members that bought the boat just because they like the looks of the fiberglass arch on the 1999 and older boats. I have a non furling main and it can be a handful to raise or reef and has a lot of weather helm. With the furling main the boat is more balanced under sail and there's no cover to deal with.
Sailing magazine featured the 340 in their "Used Boat Notebook" section a couple months ago. They haven't updated their online site with the article yet, but the photos I've attached are clear enough to zoom in and read if you want.
Good luck finding the right boat.

I am actually selling my Hunter 340. It is currently listed in yacht world. It does have a SS arch. I am located on Narragansett Bay in Warwick, it is a 2000 has lazy jacks, not a furling main. I have owned it since 2008 and would not be selling it if We were not moving next year.

Pat,

Thank you,
Yes, I did see your listing. Your boat looks very nice, however I'm really looking for a roller main. I may at some point have to adjust my 'wants' to fit what's on the market but not giving up just yet :)

thank you again and good luck!

Bill19233,

Thank you for the article...it solidified my desire for a 340! Interestingly enough, my wife prefers the fiberglass arch and thinks it looks better than the SS. I could go either way but my driving preference is a roller main so it will most likely come with the SS arch by default. We're quickly approaching end of season here in the Northeast so if it doesn't happen until next Spring I won't be too disappointed. I want to make sure we get what we want versus compromising to buy something quick just so we can use it for a couple weekends before winter haul out.

Thanks, TDC

I just bought a Hunter 33 last year with in mast roller main. Although I like it I would not let it be a deciding factor if or when I look for my next boat.
My advice to you would be to find a boat that you like within your budget and focus more on engine condition and hours, the rigging and the condition of the sails. (are they bagged or have they been replaced recently)? Does it have a Bimini in good condition? Because they cost major$.
Make sure you go for a sea trial. Get a survey. If all these boxes are ticked then buy it.
If it has roller main then great, if not then no big deal.
BTW. I love my stainless arch. They are a solid piece of kit. I seriously think it is the best thing about the Hunters. There are so many uses for them that you are only limited by your imagination.
