Kc2jxy,

When making such posts learn to give more information. Like where you are.

Those of use on sailing boards usually use our first names, confidendentiality is not that big an issue.

I recommend taking a basic sailing course. While much informantion and terminology can be learned on line and in books, nothing will beat the U. S. Sailing Basic course.

There is a great deal of basic saftey information that you need to understand, and under the hands of an approved basic sailing instructor you will get the basics with guidance. That is you will not kill yourself the first time.

Come down south to an approved sailing school. Locally there is an approved school who teaches the basics on two weekends.

In the meantime see:

We were all green at one time or another. A sailing school is always the best bet, as Ed has mentioned. A safe boating course put out by the US Power Squadron is also a must if you plan on sailing coastal waters. The O'Day 23 is not only one of the most forgiving boats for the novice learner, it's a boat that you'll want to stick with. As Ed pointed out, you need to provide more information. Are you planning on putting this boat on a mooring or slip, or trailering? Lake, or coastal waters? There's so much to sailing, but you can start right now by heading down to your local public library and drawing out some books on sailing. This will give you a big head start in the learning process. There is one gadget on the market that helped me immensely in learning to sail, and that is the Davis Windex mounted on a 12" extension bracket at the top of the mast. It takes all the guess work out of wind direction. I can't recommend this wind indicator high enough. It's always been an absolute must on my boat. Good Luck!

Good Morning

Sorry about leading you guys on here. My name is Dusty living in up state New York, near Oneonta. My plan is to trailer the boat for now and hoping to moor it in the Kingston area on the Hudson. I've been throught US Sailing on line courses and have in ownership a small collection of books and vidios on sailing from electrical, fiberglass boat repairs, engine over hauls, rigging, ect, ect. Also have sign up for a sailing course this spring. THE BUG HAS BIT. I have a sunfish, and a 16' AMF (great little sail boat) and now a 1974 O'Day Convetable ( the one on my home page). Pick this up last fall free with the trailer, but once i got it home and clean up i fell in love with it. It needed to sail like it did when it was new, so I have start removing paint (many layers of paint) which is almost completed, Remove layer of rust off of the kneel, Pull the outboard off and tested ,replace starter parts, check charging system. Also invited my wife aboard (using a step ladder) with a bottle of wine and cheese and crackers, (to keep her in the loop) and had dreams of being big water watching the sun set. With old man winter moving on and spring in the air the boat poject should come back to life (if god willing)with hope of wetting the kneel late July 2009 (????)
So What i was looking for older sailor who is willing to share there ideals, and help them to get there boat in the water this spring.

Hi Dusty- I am no expert, but have owned several O'Day 23's. Feel free to ask me anything about your boat and I might be able to help. There are also a few others here that really know the 23. They will give you great answers if you ask a very specific question. The weak link of these boats is the centerboard. As the slot in the keel casing rusts, it tends to "pinch" the centerboard in the up position. I mention this now so you can look at yours and still possibly meet your launch date. Some use their boat with a stuck center board. My experience has been the boat sails like a pig and is not much fun without a smooth operating centerboard. There is much info on c/b repair in archives. Best of luck to you with your project.

My apology kc2jxy, I see you had already posted concerning c/b issues. I somehow missed that post. How is the boat coming along?
