My wife and I are looking at a Hunter 25, it's a 1978, new bottom paint, very good condition with all the usual stuff, a 9.9 Johnson s/ long shaft, 12 volt battery, two almost new jibs but only a servicable mainsail. It has been out of the water since 1996. It has a master control panel for cabin lights, anchor light, running lights and a portable 4 amp battery recharger, and an electric bilge pump. Also a VHF radio/telephone and bulkhead compass. The asking price now is $5500.00. It seems like a good price to me, is it? It has been for sail for 10 months. Also what is the average price for a mailsail for this Hunter. As you can probably tell this is our first sailboat excecpt for our snark. Any info is appreciated.

Check sails

I would spend the money for a survey. You can probably recoup the money by getting the price lower. Two biggest things, soft decks and sail condition. These are what would cost you big money. The rest of any issues are probably cosmetic. What you put into a boat is dependent on how you would use it and how long you plan to keep the boat. New main around $700. Don't forget the headsails. 130% genoa about another $700.

Sounds a little high

$5,500 sounds a little high to me, even if the boat is in very good condition. A suvey might be a good idea, but make sure the surveyor knows what he is doing. Paying a few hundred dollars for someone to tell you its an older boat isn't very helpful. If you are satisfied with the condition I'd start with an offer of $4,000-$4,500. Good luck.

Price

I checked over on the Soundings site.(www.soundingsonline.com) There was were 6, 25s for sale, one with an asking price of $2,500, which was an abberation, with a high of $7,500. You might check it out but I would say that $5500 was a low to average asking price. Another site www.yachtworld.com has an average asking price of about $6500. You can probably get it for $4800-$5000 which would fall in line with other asking prices. Condition is everything and if it looks well maintained, it sounds llike a fair price. These are nice boats, so eventually their price will bottom out, unless the individual boat is a disaster. Good luck

H25

Book value average in good condition is $6250. The books have been 10 to 30 percent too low in the past year. Values are now stablizing. All this means nothing. The value of a vessel this age depends on a good survey, which also arrives at a fair market value. Generally the survey will include current value and replacement value.

I have one 1981 and I think it is a great boat. The red flag I see is why does she have and electric bildge pump. There should be no water in this boat. (are the keel bolts leaking?)

I paid $1900 for a 75 H25

I paid $1900 for a 75 H 25. Just bought it this winter. It has a 9.9 HP nissan, alternator, electric start, in good shape, a Good main, servicable 110% jib, and a storm job, Needed cleaning, bottom paint, some TLC but was ready to sail the day I bought it (and I did). Think I got agreat deal. To get $5500 for that year I would expect a boat that does not need a lot of work. If it does keep looking. Dan
