I'd like to get a wood tiller for my Hunter 26 and have seen it mentioned a couple times that contributors have found them. Where did you find it? None of the standard sizes carried by West or Boat US are long enough. Were you able to find them "off the rack" or were they custom? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

no woodies but into leather

I have many times pondered the same, but have not run into a proper size nor shape to fit. A year ago, I went to the local leather craft store and bought leather "shoe laces" and proceed to tie a braid around the top 18' of the helm. It not only looks good, but really makes sailing much more enjoyable when it is 34 degrees outside! Good luck! piratet@micron.net

H & L Marine

Gerard: Check out H & L Marine in Rancho Dominquez, CA. I do not have their phone number handy but can get it for you if you cannot find it. They are located in So. Cal. They also make custom wood products for boats.

I am looking at that too

H&L Marine 2965 E Harcourt Street Rancho Dominguez CA 90221 (323) 636-1718 They do not have one listed for any of the Hunters but will make one. They will send you a booklet with the dimensions listed and there may be one close. I have the booklet but have nut compared the dimensions yet to see if one for a different type of boat will work.

Make it

Maybe try using maple, or ash strips and laminate your own.

H&L also

On the recommendation of my Hunter dealer I called H&L Marine(213)636-1718 a couple of years ago and they asked me the trace my H26 tiller(it's a pipe, dammit) and I sent it to them and soon they called back with a quote and I had a nice tiller in approximately a month later. I opted for the unfinished one and I think it saved me $10 and I think the final cost with shipping was around 70-80 bucks, one of the nicest purchases I've made for our boat. I feel more secure when thunderstorms approach, It looks thousand percent better than the"pipe" and it's easy to add stuff to the wood like auto tiller pilot and the tiller extension. A hint, when you reinstall the swivel for the tiller extension, get rid of the clevis pin and use a cotterless detent pin instead. With that small change you can store the ugly extension in the lazarette until needed and when needed just pull the pin and insert the extension! works great and then you don't have to ruin the looks of your new wood tiller with the gaudy red extension retainer because the extension is only on the tiller when you feel like using it!
