I've been trying to find the manufacturer's specified idled speed for the Universal M18 engine. I've searched the owners manual, service manual, and google, but still come up blank. I know Mainesail has posted idle specs for the M25 line, but I haven't seen anything official for the M18, two cylinder version.

I've heard some people say 800 rpms is optimal. Others say 1000-1200 rpms! Anyone know?

weinie, IRC, someone on sailnet suggested all the Universals were 1,000 rpm.

My recommendation? Find what works. If 800 results in rattling, teeth-crunching noise, move it a tad up to 1000. One of your questions was the transmsision and I think we put that one to bed, right?

Agree with Stu, do not waste time and effort looking for some factory spec that may no longer suit your engine. Engine and motor mounts wear may dictate a different idle speed. The tachometer may be off. Just listen and feel for the right idle speed.
