I am moving my boat from NY to Rhode Island this season and I have done a lot of research but wanted input from those with experience with Rhode Island. Since I live in New Jersey I need a well protected location but not too far in from the Block Island Sound that is the best price but also offers the most for the money. I am heading up next weekend to scout the area and would like input before then. Thanks.

The closer you get to the mouth of the Bay, the more expensive the marina.

We have been at Pirate Cove Marina in Portsmouth, RI (on the Sakonnet side of Aquidneck Is.) for the past 14 seasons, and have been very satisfied there. Check out their website for info. They are about 10 NM north of the mouth of the Sakonnet Bay (maps and charts refer to it as Sakonnet River - but it is not a river and never was). They have both slips (with finger docks on EACH side of the slip), and moorings with a dinghy dock for those on moorings. They can provide a full range of quality yard work at reasonable prices, and allow boat owners to do whatever work they want to do them selves.

I have checked out their website and spoke to them. Their rate for slips was not the highest but also not the most competitive. What would you think of a mooring for someone out of state? I live in New Jersey and won't be able to get there on a moments notice to check on my boat for what ever reason.

Re: Looking for the Best Marina's at the Best Price in Rhode

We are also "out of state" but only about 50 minutes away. In City Island, NY you are about 2-1/2 to 3 hours away. We have been on a mooring there for the last 14 seasons and will be there again this coming season. We we know that there is going to be a "blow" or if we will be away for a few weeks or more, we put on a second mooring pendant line that is of different length than the primary pendant. The shorter one is the primary mooring line and the second one is there just in case the primary breaks. The 2 lines do tend to wrap around each other due to tidal current changes. I use a Yale Maxi-Moor II 3/4" x 16' for my regular pendant, and the another similar one added ocassionaly as the backup pendant. A 2 line bridal with a swivel near its base would eliminate the twisting of the 2 lines. Something to consider in your case with the time and distance away.

If BI Sound is your main goal you could check out the Watch Hill RI (a couple marinas) area and also the Pt. Judith Pond. Those areas closer to BI than I am up in Wickford but I love Wickford for weekend day sails on NGBay or a launching point for week long trips to the LI sound, BI Sound and MV sound areas.

I was at Watch Hill for 5 years from 1998-2002 seasons. I finally left because the marina cost was going up 20% per year with no end in sight. It is a well protected area and that is it's best feature IMO. But along with that protection, there is a 45 min motor out to Fisher Island Sound to go out to Block or East to Long Island Sound.

After spending the last 10 years in Narragansett Bay, I must say that the sailing is far superior to the Fisher Island Sound area.

When I was waiting for my Hunter at Mystic marina I was amazed at how many sailboat owners were from NJ,it's up the river not too far and the area also has lot's of moorings and Mystic seaport is a nice area to keep a boat.
Just some thing to maybe look into,I made many a trip from Greenport LI over to the area has great sailing for sure and coming from NJ is closer too right off 95.

Oh....Yaaaa..... I'm with you on that. If we are rating..... I'd give W.H. a 2 and Wickford a 9.5 because after you do that slow, painful, and very tight 45 min drive then you are in the F.I.Sound which is a Washing Machine set on Extra Heavy Duty Cycle dodging everything stationary and moving from 3 or 4 directions. I visit a friend there who has been there for over 25 years and I keep asking him.... Why ?

Re: Looking for the Best Marina's at the Best Price in Rhode

My information is somewhat dated but from 1993-95 we kept our Columbia 10.7 at Brewer's Sakonnet Marina, Portsmouth, RI. I thought the location and amenities were wonderful. The swimming pool was a big hit with the family since we had four children at the time. Access to the Sakonnet River and Naragansett Bay was easy. I can't comment on the rates. Check out their website.

All of your input is very valuable and very much appreciated. I am going to Newport for the weekend and scouting the area. I will definitely check out all your suggestions except for Brewers. Not that I think Brewers is bad. It's just that their prices are always so high. I know a pool is a great amenity but I would rather the pool be at the other end of the trip. It gives my crew a reason to leave the dock especially when any of my 4 children or my girlfriends 4 children come along and this is more than a boatload.
