I'm looking for great anchorages...islands...and in general great adventures on the Great Lakes.

You have it all

Mike: Stand on your dock and look 3 miles north (more or less). You will see Kelleys Island to the right and South Bass Island to the left (or straight ahead). Put In Bay on South Bass has something for everyone from under age drinkers to old farts who want to drive around on a golf cart. Nice moorings, or dockage, as your mood dictates, and a free shuttle from the moorings to the dock. Changing countries is easy as well.In back of Kelleys Island is Pelee Island, in Canada. Probably no more than 10 miles from you....probably less. Many good anchorages and marinas there as well. Even the basic Lake Erie Cruising guides will have plenty of places to visit. Everyone has their own personal favorite spot, but western lake Erie probably is equal to any other place on the Lakes because of the islands. Go sailing next season, or take a ferry over now and find your own favorite spot. Jeff

Georgian Bay

Mike, depending on your draught, the 30,000 islands (actually an Air Force photo survey estimated there are 90,000) area of Georgian Bay off Lake Huron are spectacular! Good luck.

Sailing Magazine - July 2001

There was an excellent article in the July 2001 issue of Sailing Magazine about a cruise of the Georgian Bay. Check the link below. The article isn't online, but I think you can order back issues from their web site.

Give Lake Ontario a try.

There is much to see on Lake Ontario. You have Canada to the north and New York to the south, both with great ports to visit. The St. Lawrence River offers the 1000 Island area. I have attempted to capture some of the sites on my website listed below. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

Door County Wisconsin....

The Door County of Wisonsin on the bay side of Green Bay has the greatest harbors I've ever been to. Big tourist attraction, lots of shopping and resturants. You'll see boats from all over the Great Lakes and even from all over the world as "The Door" is world renown. Steve, s/v Rover (P323)

How close?

Jeff mentioned the islands. I've been sailing out of Huron for three seasons and have seen less than 10% of the places they rave about. Had a nice time at the new state park on Middle Bass this year. If you have the vacation time or are trailering then someone mentioned Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Everyone says the anchorages in the North Channel are the best. See the Link below. Several from our area go there every year.

We live in Racine, WI just below Milwaukee. We have taken MANY trips in our trusty '89 H28.5, the longest being 3 weeks! Here's the breakdown... WI: Nice, easy sail to Pt Washington whcich has a nice harbor, municipal marina with good showers, restaurants nearby and plenty of shopping for the ladies. ANother easy sail to Sheboygan which also has shopping, nautical shops, good restaurants and a great marina. Next, up to Manitowoc withits nice harbor, nautical museum and a submarine open for tours, and there are good restaurants and shopping. All of these are within walking distance. Algoma has a small boat harbor, is very quaint, has a winery and a food store, allwithin walking distance. The ALaska Club is a nice restaurant some distance away, but the owner will come and get you and bring you back to your boat. From Algoma, it's a short sail to the Sturgeon Bay ship channel and Sturgeon BAy itself. See Palmer Johnson yachts being produced, and walk to restaurants and shops. You can also see huge tankers and oreboats going through the channel. From there, go NE to Door County with Ephraim, Fish Creek (a favorite but crowded) and Sister Bay. In Michigan, there are many neat harbors all within 8-12 miles of each other. Saugutuck, Holland, Grand Haven, Muskegon, White Lake, Pentwater (really neat!), Ludington, Frankfurt, Manistee..all offer lots to see and all within walking distance of their harbors. Enjoy!

Upper Bay of Green Bay

Want an Adventure? Start at Sturgeon Bay, WI or at Menominee, MI and sail north. Ports of Escanaba, MI and then across to the ghost town of Fayette, MI. Next, Washington Island, WI. Then onto Beaver Island (the only island in the US that had a King). Then up to the North Channel. Sailing in the northern climates at its best. Lots of warm days, cool nights, and the ever popular mosquito!

Living in Door County, WI.

I have visited here and sailed the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan for 33 years. The Sturgeon Bay area is really outstanding for sailing. We dock our 27' 1979 Catalina at the Yacht Harbor. Previous to this boat and still currently owned, is a 1970 17' Starcraft Upstart (Day Sailer) that I have taken on a solo trip around the Door Penninsula (open cockpit, no cuddy for 14 days) CRAZY to do it. The best sailing ever for me is the North Channel, and spent 10 days on a rented(out of Gore Bay) 31 footer. Go see the POOL at the end of Bae Finn.
