I am looking for old photos of the sailing vessel "Wanderer" owned by the actor Sterling Hayden. Any help would be appreciated. Photos, history, info source, anything. Thanks.

Can't help with the info you seek, but you might enjoy reading John Masefield's book "The Wanderer of Liverpool", published in 1930. It describes the construction and sailing history of one of the last of the great square-riggers ever built. Masefield was Poet Laureate of England for more than 35 years, and in this volume includes poems, prose, artwork, photographs, and a voyage-by-voyage account of the ship's experiences, including surviving a cyclone (hurricane) in the Bay of Bengal in December of 1896 of such ferocity that there was "nothing to be mentioned in the same day with it", according to well-seasoned crewmen aboard. Captain Brander, who had rounded the Horn more than twenty times, said he had never known a storm like it. 'Wanderer' has been a popular ship's name, but I wonder if this one inspired Hayden's choice for his own vessel. Both books are good reads - good luck on the photos.

The Book "Wanderer"

I have the book, Wanderer, written by Sterling Hayden (publisher W.W. Norton & Company, 1963, 1977). It has several photos of the Wanderer. I am sure you can find the book from a local book store or one of the out of print marine book suppliers. Sorry, I am hanging on to my edition. Bob
