Novelman, We have wonderful friends who sail out of Newton Beach(?sp) and belong to the sailing club there. You pay a monthly mebership fee but don't own a boat, they can rent just about anything you can think of. Anyway, they are relative newbies and are wanting to sail and overnight to Catalina Island. My question is this: Are you aware of the harbour rules and anchoring abilities there? Must arrangements be made in advance or is it first come first serve for a buoy etc.? They've asked us to come out from Indiana and help them with this and we'd love to. We are ASA certified but have never been to Catalina so am looking for information. The Catalina web site is a little lacking in harbour information. Hope to hear from you soon, Steve Paul

Catalina

Hi Steve, It's a great sail to Catalina. but I would never anchor anywhere on Catalina with a boat I was not familiar with (many anchorages are in deep water except where you can tie-up to a mooring). There are at least 3 places where you can tie-up to a mooring. They are. Avalon, where all the activity is, BUT...if you go on summer week-ends you will never be able to find one free. Unless you go over in the late fall or winter (October-April). If you plan on going there sail over in mid-week since the moorings are first-come-first-served. When you go mid-week you can usually stay thru the weekend, but check first when you arrive. Then there are two mooring sites on the other end of Catalina (the west end) The sailing distance to them is an additional 2-4 hours for the mainland side (the Isthmus)or 4-6 hours for the opposite side in "Catalina Harbor". You can almost always find tie-ups at either except on holiday week-ends or during special activities. Go to the Catalina web site and look at "The Isthmus" to get e-mail and telephone connections AND check first. If you can't find them e-mail me at novelman@adelphia.net and I will look it up and send it to you. Good luck! Novelman Duane Beaver
