The best place to start looking for a sail is from this website. They have quality sails at reasonable prices. When you purchase a sail you need to consider the parts that go into the sail. The weight of the cloth has little meaning to the quality of the end product.

Be sure that when you do your comparison shopping that you specify the same hardware, the same sail cloth make/mfg, the same dimensions, reef points, stitching etc. Without all of the same components you are not comparing apples to apples.

Steve makes some good points. I recently purchased a new sail for my Highlander. It is a from a known loft and the quality is good. But the fit is terrible, the reason I got such a good price I suppose. I am glad that when I bought my H37C mainsail that I had a loft measure and fit the sail. When I was still in Ohio they would also store and clean it. I did buy my drifter sight unseen from Sail Warehouse and the quality matched their rating. And for an excellent price.

You may also want to try Bacon Sails http://www.baconsails.com. They have tended to specialize in used sails. They are located in Annapolis, MD and open to the the walk iin public, so if you could even take a look at them in person if you felt you needed to. They also have some great prices on used and new sailing equiptment. Any project oriented sailor (arn't we all) within a three hour drive should come a take a walk around the shop.

Thank You all, i ended up going with a small local but well trusted sailmaker to make a new mainsail, he was a few dollars more but he will be coming down to the boat to take measurements himself and a few other nice touches that appealed to me. however as a novice sailboat owner Im sure I will be calling on you all again for more insight.

Great decision. I am surprised that Steve didn't brief you in his sailboat economics. That you have to amortize everything over ten years. So what's $150. a year for a new mainsail? Just skip two nights out with the little woman.
