Hi all,
Love this site, big thanks for whoever is maintaining it.

I am very much in the market for a 1984-1987 Hunter 31 with a deep draft (5') keel. I have scoured all of the main online sites (sailboatlistings.com, sailingtexas.com, boats.com, boattrader.com, yachtworld.com, this forum, craigslist). I'm picking over those but 1) the deep drafts seem less common than the shoal keels and 2) just haven't found much that wouldn't require shipping the boat cross-country (I live in north Texas). I have heard however that often boats are advertised for sale just up on bulletin boards at marinas, without ever really putting an ad online. If anyone comes across any of these in their travels for that 84-87 H31, please shoot me a message. Or if you know someone who owns one who would consider selling, would appreciate those leads too.

Thanks everyone.
Rich

EDIT: Also I read all about the compression post problem, so definitely know to watch out for that.

Lots has been written on the debate between the two keels. The plus side of the shoal is that you have more options as to where to anchor meaning you can get a little deeper into protective coves when necessary, and they are a bit faster. Since Hunter produced far more H31 shoal keels, you may also end up with a much smaller selection and greater transport costs in your search for the deep draft. I can't remember the specs now, but I recall the difference was about a 1'.

That one sold literally about 12 hours before I could get my deposit down on it. I am pretty miffed, that was the perfect boat for what I was looking for. It still has an ad up in some places but the seller took the main craigslist post down. Thank you for the referral though, very good eye.

Interesting. I don't mean to re-hash anything previously hashed but I thought the deep keels were faster, at least they point higher and were more desired by racers. If you look at the J/30 that is a deep-style keel. If I weren't going to be land-locked and if I had the option of taking the boat to the Caribbean I'd go for the shoal keel as I heard that extra foot can make a difference. But for me the concept of being a little quicker, plus being less tender (which the wife and kids will appreciate) has been winning the thought process.

Thanks MN. Saw that one, seemed a little on the pricey side for a pre-87 but it did have some good equipment on board.

I am seriously considering one but it is way out in North Carolina. It is proving difficult to get a quote to ship it. Anyone have any contacts who I could get a shipping quote from? I also wouldn't be against, a little crazy I know, shipping it to the west cost of Florida and sailing it to say Houston to then finish its road journey, if that would cut down significantly on the shipping cost.

Thanks very kindly but I think I'll pass on that one. Still in the market, if anyone sees a H31 (83-87) for sale locally please shoot me a note.
