Hunter 28 Hamilton
Greetings to Hunter members,
We are urgently looking for information as to what to look for on both the 1990 28", A 1985 and 1988 28.5 as we have been looking for a boat to suit our cruising wants and now have these three to choose from. To be honest I know nothing about the problems on these boats except to look for a leaky forward hatch and side windows on the 1985 28.5 and a friend said to check the deck core on either side of the mast on the 1990 28" plus he heard the water tank seal in the front "V" berth is not always a perfect seal.

I would really appreciate any other things I should look for as the boats look good and roomy for our purposes but it is nice not to have surprises...so recomendations gratefully appreciated.

John

Hey Nautikal
welcome aboard. how do you intend to use the boat? Crusing, daysailing, overnight on weekends....
It would help us to know.

Can only tell you about the H28.5, a friend's boat that I sail a few times a year. For its size it is very comfortable. It is nice sailing boat. He has installed a simple window air-conditioner in the head bulkhead so the outside end is on the starboard locker. Cheap and effective. For an area with big tides and currents it may be underpowered.

I'd suggest you check in on: www.huntertwentyeightfive.com
The 28.5 is somewhat different than the 28 as it is a masthead rig and has either a 5'-2" deep keel or a 4'-0" shoal draft keel. Leaky hatches, water tank seals or port light seals are minor easily fixed issues that may indicate a lack of normal maintenance. Since the mast is deck stepped on both models, there should be no water intrusion into the core unless some hardware was incorrectly mounted and improperly sealed. I have only experienced dried out gaskets on port lights that were replaced in minutes at minimal cost. I'd be more interested in the condition of the Yanmar diesel and the condition of the sails.
