I am trying to locate my deceased grandfather's 17ft O'Day daysailer 1960-61 originating in Rhode Island. The only numbers I have were the numbars on the sail 2377. I am sure I am looking for a needle in a hay stack and it is probably burried in someones back yard. My father is searching for the boat and it would mean the world to us. Is there any way to track down a boat with only the sail numbers? Unfortunately I am ignorant when it comes to sail numbars. My father states that the sail number represents the number in the number of production. So he thinks it was the 2,377 Daysiler produced. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If the boat was registered, maybe you could get a serial number or current owner from the state. Seems unlikely. I would suggest finding a vintage daysailer & restoring it with your father in your grandfathers memory. Add an appropriate name to the boat & the time you spend with your father restoring & sailing would would be a lasting memory & tribute.

looking for the HIN
The HIN (Hull identification number) may be on the inside of the cuddy, inside of the transom or middle outside bottom of the transom. If your sail is the original, it should be the same as the hull number. Actually your hull number will be XDYD2377, then have some additional numbers to id the month and year of mfg. It was not required before a certain date, but some mfgs did put them on. Check those places on your daysailer. The DS 1 was built by o-day from 1957 to 72. The DS II's start with hull number 4522 in 1971, so it definately had to be mfg'ed before that date. See this link to understand HIN's My (sail number) is 7784 and I know my boat was mfg'ed in September 1974 from the HIN XDYD77840974.

Keith, I read your original entry with interest. I too was looking for a "missing" DS. In my case it was my own. The one I had sold almost 30 years ago. I never really expected to find it and got so excited finding a DS in good Sailing shape that I decided to buy it and restore the shine. Both Pdux and Ed21 have good ideas. If there is still an active club in the area where your grandfather was sailing, they may still be keeping track of boats. However, like the boat I just bought in Texas had been owned by someone in Ohio, yet was originally registered in Vermont. You've got to love the boat. It is a classic just as your grandfather was a classic I'd guess. God Bless.
