Hi: We're looking at buying a sailboat (having only been working guests on other friends boats in the past) and would like opinions on the Cal 2 - 29 - especially for one built in 1974. Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sheila

Cruisin' Cal

Sheila, I normally tell folks two things: 1) Do not fall in love till after the survey. 2) Start with a small yacht first. Having said that this is America and a Cal 29 is not a huge vessel, they are sea-kindly and as forgiving a yacht as you can find. I like em! Mind you, this is not built for speed, for taking the punishment rather, and tracking well with their full keel. Do not buy one with an Atomic four, go for a diesel engine.

Hull - 1974 Cal

BTW 1974 would have been a laid-up FRP Polyester Hull, and quite strong too. Some of the hulls in those years, right in the same area, were resin starved due to the oil shortage. I am not positive on the Cals, but will do a bit of research. I have never come across a really bad Cal hull yet, but mayhap some of the mates here abouts can help you here?
