I am in the market for a new sailboat. I'm a relatively new sailor and often sail alone. I'm moving up from a 17' trailer sailor. On the weekend, while cruising the net, I found the Nonsuch22. It's very cute! and it seems to have everything I want in a boat. My questions are: 1) how safe are these boats? I will be sailing on the great lakes (Georgian Bay). I tried to figure out the capsize ratio and got a score of 1.9, which would qualify the 22 as a blue-water boat. Are they really this stable? 2) are there any known weaknesses that I should watch out for while shopping? (I know, I'll get a survey...but anything else?) 3) is that great big sail hard to raise? I'm a petite female. Thanks and please feel free to share any insight/comments/etc. Suzeh Ontario.

The Nonsuch 22..

Is an outstanding 22 footer and very sea worthy compared to just about anything in that size range. The Nonsuch 22 is a HUGE 22 footer... Check out the Nonsuch Photo Galleries here: http://www.pbase.com/nonsuch for more information on these boats. The owner of the Nonsuch 22 Pewriwinkle, Pam, is a solo woman sailor and there is a link to her blog web site, on the Periwinkles gallery http://www.pbase.com/nonsuch/22_periwinkle_hull7 where you might be able to contact her and ask her these questions directly!

thanks!

Great idea! Thanks. I will do that. I'm trying to decide between a full keel 26' sloop and the Nonsuch. I just want to make sure that a boat that small can handle the potentially (I've never been out there so I'm no sure) big waves that can be found on the Great Lakes. Thanks again for your suggestion. Nonsuch

I can attest to the strength of a Nonsuch. My Nonsuch 26 was unmoored and thrashed by Katrina. She was tossed and bounced through the woods for approx 5 hrs. She was damaged but was still floating and took on no water. Nonsuchs' are strong and sail beautifully. My $.02...

capsize ratio

I was interested in your reference to a "capsize ratio." Can you tell me more about that and how to figure it? I'm thinking of buying a Nonsuch myself and I would like to know more about its resistance to capsize. Thanks.
