Since we are not sailing much this Memorial day weekend Two Questions; First - Any free advice on what would constitute major structural issues with an iron keel? Is it just a high maintainence item, or are there telltail problems that we should steer clear of? Second - any reccommendations of a Surveyor in the South Haven, Michigan Area? Thanks

iron keel

If the iron keel is prepped correctly it shouldn't be that big of a deal. I have had 3 boats with iron keels with no major problems; they may require a little extra maintenance than lead but lead needs to be prepped correctly as well. Call Torresen Marine in Muskegon for the name of a surveyor. I hired one out of South Haven or Grand Haven a few years ago, but I can't remember the name.

Never touched mine!

Karen: We have had our boat since it was new and have NEVER touched our keel. I think that there tends to be more of a maintenance problem in salt water than in fresh water (obviously). I "assume" that they epoxied our keel when they did the hull during the original commissioning. Other that that we just have the keel painted with the same paint as the rest of the hull every two to threee years. By the way, our boat stays in the water year round!
