Looking for a sailboat

So I've been sailing for a little while and have been looking at purchasing a boat for a couple of weeks. I found an offer for a schock sailboat ( http://www.wdschock.com/ ) and was wondering if anyone had an opinion on the quality of boat. I haven't heard anything positive or negative so it's making it hard to judge. Thanks!

Without knowing the boat's past and history of use, it's hard to say anything.I assume you know some of these are one-design class boats heavily raced and not necessarily babied.

It's the 27 Santana, that as far as I can tell, it wasn't built for racing. I was looking more for like the opinion of Schock boats in general.

If it's an old boat and still floats, then the hull is OK. The rest of the equipment came from various manufacturers that may or may not be of high quality. Which Shock model is it? What year? Hard to advise when we only know Shock

Santana 27 don't know the year yet. Let me ask the owner.

Schock has a reputation for building fairly light, responsive boats. They're more frequently found on the West coast, since that's where they are. The Schock 35 was a pretty popular model, and a good example of their general work. The condition of the individual boat itself is actually more important than the builder's reputation. It won't do you any good to know that the builder has a good reputation when you find out that the previous owner hit a rock and you're sinking because he didn't fix it properly. Have any offer you make be subject to a professional survey that YOU pay for.

we race on a friends Santana 39, 1979 I think. She is heavy and fun to race in good wind, tough in light. We have raced against some smaller schocks and some santanas and they all do well. I can't respond too much more then that.

Santana 27 is a Gary Mull design from the late 1960s or early 1970s. He also designed Rangers in that era. I had an S-22, also a Mull design under the old MORC rule and liked it a lot. They are very nice designs. They sail well, were light and responsive for their era. A lot of cruising has been done in S-27s on Lake Mich. PHRF rating looks to be 190 to 200, meaning you won't be the fastest boat on the lake/sea, but you'll be moving nicely. It takes an outboard, rather than inboard. I used to have a Santana 20 and raced it in the late 70's and early 80's. All in all, the Schock boats are pretty well built but tend to be on the spartain side for amenities, but lots of "go fast" stuff. They were on the cutting edge of "ultra light" before the Santa Cruz craze on the west coast. The 27 as I remember, was a fairly fast boat too....

Something to think about, Schock is still building boats after over 30 years.....Not a lot of manufacturers can say that....

I too had a Santana 20, just for tooling around in. It was a good little boat, though the previous owners had put a mish-mash of sails on it, so it didn't sail as well as it could have, but for tooling around it was good. We didn't race it (actually didn't get the chance- bought at the end of 2004, and as of August 29, 2005, it ended up on the bottom of a pile of boats on the roadway). Thankfully I had only paid about $1,500 for it and probably put in another $100 fixing it up. I had good dealings with the Schock Corp.
