I have a 2002 Macgregor 26X and the factory trailer, it has just about rusted out.
I am looking for an aluminum trailer with two axles. is one type or brand better than another?
does the bunks have to lay underneath like straps ( like the old one) or can they run length ways?

The factory designed the transverse bunks to work with the design of the boat and the internal ballast tank. I would stay with that setup. I saw pictures of a Mac that was damaged by longitudinal bunks. Primarily I think as there was more weight in the boat as it had taken on rain water while on the trailer.

You might post where you are located. I had the name at one time for some nice trailers in Florida that I thought were reasonably priced. Also I'd post in the Mac forum here...

or on the following forum where there are a lot of X owners and where there has been a lot of trailer discussion with a sub-board available for only trailer related posts...
