Has anyone been to either Hawthorne Cove or Pickering Warf Marina in Salem Ma? I have never been to Salem harbor and I'm looking for any reviews on which one is better, closer to resturants, etc... Thanks, Stephen

Pickering Wharf is the front row seat.

Pickering wharf is easy to get into, well protected and the front row seat to Salem, MA It is probably expensive too. Hawthorn cove is in a nearby neighborhood and a short walk to the Salem activities.

Ditto on Tony's comments! Pickering wharf is right in the middle of Salem harbor's tourist area, and is pricey. Hawthorne Cove is just down the street-a couple minutes walk-and is a great marina-we've had our H356 there for the past 4 years.I'd recommend them without reservation

Marina in Salem

We have a mooring in Salem Harbor and can see both marinas from our mooring. Don't know what kind of boat you have, but we have a very deep keel and cannot go into either marina unless it is high tide. If you have a deep keel, you might consider a transient mooring rather than pulling up to the dock. You should also know there is not gas at either place. The waterfront area is very small, so no matter which marina you choose you can walk to the other. Pickering Wharf is where the waterfront restaurants are and is very pretty and very touristy, but a very nice place when you want to get off your boat. We are loving the area, well worth the visit.

We too have a mooring in Salem Harbor. Pickering wharf is the most expensive, and not very sailboat friendly. Hawthorne cove is fine - expect it to be approx $2/foot. However I've found your level of enjoyment there to be based uopn your neighbors. We draw 5'7". No problem. Over 6' you might have issues. They have laundry, showers, ice. Another option is to use Salem Water Taxi. Operated by Hawthorne Cove Marina. Transient mooring comes with launch service which brings you right to pickering wharf. Launch runs 8 or 830-10pm. Go to Finz for dinner. http://www.hipfinz.com/

good comments, MMerriman!

Hawthorne Cove has a nominal 6 feet at the docks, more in the outer mooring field.Be careful approaching near low tide, because there are shallows in the mooring field near the power plant. To approach the docks, you must follow the marked channel and honor the buoys! Finz is good, if you want something more casual try "when pigs fly" on derby street-between Hawthorne and Pickering wharf
