I am looking for recommendations for local Long Island Sail Lofts. My sails are in need of repair/replacement. Thanks, Jeremy

Jeremy - There is a Doyle loft in Huntington Station. I've had good service there. Where in Bay Shore are you? I know a few guys at my yard use a sailmaker who's somewhere in Babylon - not sure of the name or exactly where he is.

Have you thought about....

Jeremy, A good trick for getting off the bottom (if you have the room and the wind is co-operating) is to furl out a bit (or all) or your jib and heel the boat. This will reduce your draft and in most cases get you on your way. If you’re really stuck use the motor to assist. I bought my C30 from Bill Cook in that same yard and ran hard aground my first time out in the same spot. A guy yelled out from his yard and pointed me in the right direction. If you’re interested, I can suggest joining the South Bay Cruising Club (SBCC). It's a great bunch of sailors (over 500) that sail in the bay, we have lots of events, racing, cruising, parties, etc. It's a great way to expand your knowledge, gain experience and comrades. Let me know, I can e-mail you more details. If not, enjoy sailing on the bay. There are so many great places to go, anchor, swim, stay overnight, etc. Enjoy & good luck! Gaspare "Laurie Jean" C30, hull #641

Please send info...

Axel, Please send me info on the South Bay Cruising Club. I think that might be just what my wife and I are looking for. With what little time we've had with our boat we've really enjoyed, but we also wanted to use sailing to get out and meet people. Jeremy jarntz@gmail.com

I'm not a member, but I have one of their yearbooks and it does look like fun. I do an occasional Tuesday night race with one of the boats in the yard. I'm also looking for those great places to anchor for the day or an overnight. Coming from the north shore, I'm spoiled by plenty of coves and deep water. But drawing 4 1/2 feet, I'm still a little cautious about where I go in the bay. Walk around the yard and talk to the residents. There's a lot of friendly people in there with good local knowledge and a lot of enthusiam for sailing...

Enjoy the bay!

Greg, Jeremy, Sorry for the late reply, been away from the PC. Jeremy I'll e-mail info on the SBCC. Greg, My C30 draws 4 1/2 feet. There are plenty of great anchorages all over the bay. I often anchor off Kismet, Alantique, Sailor's Haven (my personal favorite), Great River, Hemlock Cover, etc. Then there are the marinas at Alantique, Sailor's Haven, Watch Hill. There are too many places to name, they are all over the bay from Amityville to Bellport.

I am VERY satisfied with the sails I purchased...

...from Sails East LTD., in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY. They are made off-shore, with US materials and I cannot begin to describe the workmanship. I have had my main for 5 years and my "Genny" is now 3 years old. Still "crisp" and holds shape beautifully. I usually sail in 10 to 15 kts of wind almost every weekend from April to October. They have a website, sailseast.com and offer discounts for winter orders. There is no loft, so they do not repair..only sell new sails. Happy Sailing.
