I am looking to buy a call 39 tall rig with the longer keel or a cal 40. The boat will be used for long distance cruising liveaboard, prefferably allready outfitted as such. Any opinions on which is the better boat? Or where to find one.

Cal 39 II the better cruiser

The Cal 39 II (1977-1983) is the better overall cruising boat, and actually has a higher hull speed than the Cal 40, which is an earlier design. The 39 was designed for cruising, with a nice interior layout, of which there are a couple of variations. The tall rig is fine for places with steady winds below 20 knots. There were about 150 manufactured. You can find a couple of reviews of the boat on line, and Sailing magazine just did a review about four months ago. You should be able to find three or four on the market with prices ranging from 65,000 to 90,000. Unless you find one that's just been refitted, expect to put another 40,000 or more into one to upgrade it. They are stiff boats that love to sail. cal 39

The 39 is laid out much better than the 40. It has plenty of storage and sails real nice. I can still catch just about any boat I can see when I go out for a sail. I'm curious about the number built. My hull, built in 1979, is number is 529, so I wonder if there were more than 150 built or am I missing something.

Cal 39 haul 80, shallow draft

I have sailed a Cal 39 (haul 80) since 1979. It is fast and very stable. In light wind it will out perform most boats. They are well worth the cost of upgrading. After sailing it for 25+ years, I am slowing upgrading many items, including replacing the large plastic frame windows with custom built white oak (exterior) and teak (interior) frames. The tall rig/deep draft is not good for many areas of the Chesapeake Bay.
