Hi Guys
I am new to the list, and an old school sailor wanting back in the water. I learned to sail on my own in a little sunfish knockoff in the 60's, Nothing formal. I loved it, in the early 80's when I left the army I bought a 27' newport Mark III ... WOW 2 sails huh??? *grins* So with no help or advice I learned in her the hard way how it all works. I ended up taking her from Virginia down the east coast, around the keys and playing in the gulf and carribian for 3 months.
Ok so duty calls, I sell the boat, work like a madman for 20 years and missed the water. The only thing I really saw all my time on the water was this really neat boat, an Albin Vega. Her owner said he could singlehand her across any ocean, he explained her unique rudder setup, the variable pitch prop that would feather to reduce the drag, and that there was no safer boat for blue water single sailing. He sold me and now I have decided to sell the business, the house, and become a bum again. And unless there's a more reliable singlehand boat to be had than the Vega I am in the market for one.
I intend do go back down the east coast, maybe head across the gulf to mexico, then down to panama or so and knock around the carib a bit. After that I am definately wanting to do Europe all the way up to Sweden and Norway. With all that said I want to add that I'd prefer a diesel, the more fuel the better (I'm a diesel mechanic by trade) I have some HF, VHF gear, GPS etc I want to add, bt it all starts out with a good boat. Unless somebody can suggest a better offshore long haul singlehander I'm looking for a vega... Anybody seen one lately? Thanks in advance!
Claude
