HUNTER 29.5 WILMETTE, IL
All Hunter owners,
I'm looking for a 1993 or newer 29, 29.5, 30 or 301 shoal draft Hunter in the Lake Michigan area. Don't want to truck one in. Anyone have one for sale? Any advice on which model / year is best? Currently sail a 1978 Pearson 28 out of Wilmette Harbor, north of Chicago. She draws 4'6" and our harbor is just getting too shallow.

Have read some horror stories here about soggy deck cores in Hunters. Is this common?
Thanks,
Marshall Moretta :)

Thanks,
I did, but haven't found the right one yet.
One other idea.... every boat is for sale...... ;^)

Lots on boats in your area. Go on a dock walk and find one or more that meets your criteria. Leave a nice note to the owner in weighted waterproof bag saying you like his boat would would be interested in talking if he ever planned to sell it. You might be supprised how many people bite. In any case people like knowing people like their boats. They will probalyy call just to chat and talk boats. And you might learn something about the models.

I know that some/all of the westrec marinas have gates, but that's a solvable problem! ;^)

Jackdaw,
Thanks, good suggestion.
I've done this with houses (although not with much luck).
I'll try it.

I recently phoned a guy in our harbor (both home & office) who inherited a Hunter 29.5 from his father. He lives miles away and hardly ever sails. As you suggested, I told him I had admired his boat and would appreciate a call back to discuss whether he might be interested in selling. Never heard from him - and he's a member of our yacht club. I don't think his attitude is typical of sailboat owners.

Shoal draft? I have a 295 and it draws 4' ... I wish you luck. The Hunter I have that was nearly abandoned. now I've restoring her new sails, sole, electronics. But, the worst part of these models is the floor beneath the hot water tank. With merely a towel coat fiberglass it separated from the plywood. I cut out the rotted wood replaced , began coating the marine plywood with fiberglass. When the light came on. I drove to my friendly Home Depot and glued FRP. Replaced the hot water tank and saved myself a lot of misery.
