Looking at Hunter 22

Am considering a Hunter 22 but can't find out much about it beyond the specs. Would really appreciate some feedback from current owners. Most of our sailing is done on Lake Sinclair in Ga, but we would like to go to the Gulf coast two or three times a year. Is it really possible to sleep in the cuddy? Thanks for any insight.

You looking at the one on craigslist that is on lanier?

I've just bought my 22 but so far I've been very happy with it. Mine is the full keel version most I think are a swing keel setup.

OOps...

It appears that there must be 2 models of the Hunter 22. The one I am interested in is the upgraded model of the 216 which I believe began production in 2011 or 2012. Curious of Hunter to have two models designated the same...

I'm going to answer your "can we sleep aboard" the answer is yes, but you have to be good friends, my 3 kids and I would spend 2 weeks on Lake Champlain every summer for about 4 years, there are a lot of port-a-potties on shore. You will have a great time with her.

As you note, the H22 is the same design as the former H216, but in fiberglass. I suggest you review the H216 reviews. I've enjoyed my H216 for several years of day sailing on Saginaw Bay, which is somewhere between a little lake and the open ocean. It's a good safe boat, for its size, and rides well in a sea. I would not try to go out in something over 20 kt breeze or over 3 foot seas, nor be caught away from port if that were likely to happen. Personally, I would not sleep aboard for comfort reasons, but I've read of some owners that do camp out. The cuddy is very cramped, particularly after stowing your sailing gear. There is open space under the cockpit, but accessing it is for gymnasts only. There are some good articles in this site's owner modifications on upgrades, including installing flooring in the cuddy for sleeping. One issue is that the mast boot always leaks and there is no isolated bilge, so water does accumulate in a rain. Good luck.

There are some differences in the construction, weights, measurments and so on. The 22 did replace the 216. Look under boat information and that should help. Parsons gave some good advice which should be used for the new 22 as well.

One big difference is the new 22 is almost 1000lbs heavier; that may mean a larger tow vehicle and a class 3 hitch. our 216 tows nicely behind a minivan with a 2000lb tow limit, the new 22 would need a large suv or truck to tow it.

Does anyone know what the differences are between the cuddy cabins between the 216 and the 22. It looks to me like the 22 has a vee berth and two portholes. Are the size of the cabins the same?

I know that some people have added vee berths to the 216. How difficult would it be to add ventilation?

Some have complained about slow steering response with the 216 rudder. Is that really an issue?

Aside from problems with the hull in icy conditions are there any other known problems with the composite.

I did own a 170 at one point and didn't have any issues with the hull.

the 216 also has a vee berth option, I only got a quick look at a 22 but I don't think there's much difference. I'm also looking at adding some small ports to the 216, I don't think it would be hard as long as you found a port that will fit flat against the hull.
the 216 steering isn't "slow" - the rudder is a high performance foil that needs water flowing by it to work. the new "barn door" rudder may work better a low speeds, but it's a lot of drag at speed - and ugly!

the composite issue seems to be tied to a bad batch of plastic (early on)- if you find one that isn't cracked, it's probably fine

There was a Hunter 22 built in the 80's that is a completely different boat, so when you're reading about the 22 make sure the year is current. And, as people here have explained, any reviews of the 216 will be pretty much the same except for the hull material, which is now fiberglass.

I have had the 216 since 216 and find the cuddy more than enough for a camping style stopover. You will need to be spare on stowage and so on.
The leakage of water can be fixed by packing some absorbent material like towel into the mast slot when rigging the boat. I find it works very well.
